When the client expressed their desire to convert an existing kitchen area to a bedroom for their 4 year old, it served as an opportunity to create a playful space that would respond to the growing needs of a child. The allotted area was to serve a dual purpose, with the major part of the room to be used as a bedroom and bathroom area, and the other smaller section to house a puja unit. The study table and a tall storage cabinet proved to be an optimal choice for dividing the room into 2 zones, without losing the continuity of the space. The design of the study table with an adjustable table top was derived from an an understanding of the changing ergonomic requirements of a child of this age. The solid white wardrobe with a dash of teal seamlessly blends into the aesthetic of the room, along with catering to the functional need of providing adequate storage for the kid’s belongings.

The colour palette for the furniture is an interplay of solid colours with wooden textures, giving the room a modern yet fresh look. The subtle introduction of curves in parts of the room, further help to break the monotony of plain rectilinear forms.

By focusing on sleek furniture with lighter hues and a hint of colour, the intent was to give the child a room that is not overbearing but has a restrained sensibility; a place where they can be free to play, explore and discover.

The far end of the room houses a Puja Cabinet, the design of which is modern yet has a touch of traditional craftsmanship. This zone has a distinct identity yet the geometry and finishes help tie it together with the rest of the space.

Creating a room that has 2 zones, one spiritual and the other playful without any stark partitions proved to be a challenging feat; yet the design approach with a focus on concepts of continuity, coherence and harmony helped in achieving the end goal of marrying the 2 spaces together with each retaining their individual identities.
